If you share a computer and don’t want other users accessing certain applications, there is a new feature in Windows 7 that allows you to block
them. For privacy purpose, you restrict access to some programs while your computer is shared. By using simple registry editor you can block the program
- Go to Start menu and click on the Run option
- Then type regedit and press enter
- In your registry window you will have several choices, click the tab named HKEY_CURRENT_USERS
- Then continue to navigate through the registry by clicking the following tabs: Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Policies and Explorer
- Then right click on the Explorer and click on the New then DWORD (32bit) Value
- Next name it to DisallowRun
- Right click on the DisallowRun option and click on Modify
- In the value data field put 1 and press enter
- Again right click on Explorer Key located at left pane of Registry Key window
- Choose New and then Key, rename it to Disallow Run
- Right click on right panel in Disallow Run key. Choose New and then String Value and make it rename to what you want
- Double click on new String which you just created
- Then type name of .exe file which you want to block from running and restart the computer to changes take effect
Through AppLocker you can restrict programs from opening. This features only available in Enterprise versions of Windows 7
