There are many reasons why you need to know how to block website. Some of the most common reasons are you have been targeted by spammers who use adware and popups to attack your PC. Other reasons may be to prevent your children from having access to certain site content such as porn and gambling. Whether you are using Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera and Safari or you are using Windows 95, 98, ME, Windows NT or 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, you can block certain Websites from opening in any Browser in all Windows Operating System by means of suitably editing Windows Hosts File. Your host file is a computer file used to store information on where to find a node on a computer network

  1. Click Start -> M y Computer
  2. Double Click the C drive -> then open w indows folder
  3. Open system32 folder -> Open the drivers folder
  4. Open Etc folder -> right click the Hosts file
  5. In Properties. Uncheck the Read-Only attribute (if checked) at the bottom of the window then click OK
  6. Double click the Hosts file and choose Notepad from the list of programs to open it with
  7. Add the text “127.0.0.1 xxx.xxxxxx.xxx” underneath the last line of text in the document. Be sure to “replace” “xxx.xxxxxx.xxx” with the address of the website you wish to block.
  8. Add as many web addresses as you like in the same fashion.
  9. Double click the Hosts file and choose “Notepad” from the list of programs to open it with.
  10. Add the text “127.0.0.1 xxx.xxxxxx.xxx” underneath the last line of text in the document. Be sure to “replace” “xxx.xxxxxx.xxx” with the address of the website you wish to block.

To block a certain web page from loading, add the following:

127.0.0.1 www.webpage.com

Your Hosts file will now look like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 www.webpage.com

Add as many web addresses as you like in the same fashion.

Once you are finished, go up to File and click Save The web pages listed in your ‘Hosts’ file should be blocked from access. It may be necessary for you to reboot your computer for these changes to take effect.
