The new interface has many shortcomings, beginning by simple things like not being able to close applications to not being able to display more than two
windows at the same time on the screen. The start button is not displaying the start menu, it leads right back to the Metro interface and the Windows key does the same. You would like to have an option to disable Metro UI completely on your desktop PC. Through regedit you can disable the Metro UI in Windows 8
- Open the Run Window by pressing Win and R key at a time
- Then type regedit and press enter
- Then registry window will open
- In your registry you will have several choices, click the tab named HKEY_CURRENT_USER
- Then continue to navigate through the registry by clicking the following tabs: Software, Microsoft, Windows, Current Version and Explorer
- In the right pane double click on RPEnabled key
- Next in the Value data field put 0 and click on OK
- Close registry editor window and restart the windows to changes take effect
To get back Metro UI just change value of RPEnabled from 0 to 1 in Step 7. Changes to the registry is always risky, make sure you have your backup to restore in case you mess up
